UK businesses have a legal obligation to ensure that workers they employ have the right to work in the UK. If these checks are not completed by businesses, the consequences include significant fines and even imprisonment.
Despite right to work checks being written into UK law, and the recent launch of the digital route for right to work checks in October 2022, there are still a staggering amount of illegal workers in the UK.
Between 1st January – 31st March 2023 alone, the Government found 509 illegal workers in the UK. As a result, 346 fines were issued to UK businesses, to the tune of £6.02 million plus further non-financial penalties.
