Lyndsey Simpson, CEO of The Curve Group, has appeared on Nicky Campbell’s BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show to discuss maternity discrimination

Lyndsey Simpson appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast show this morning (7th December) to discuss a new report issued by the Young Women’s Trust Charity on the hotly debated topic of maternity discrimination.
The survey of 800 HR decision-makers, found that 1 in 7 would admit to being hesitant about hiring women in their 20s and 30s who might have children in the future – despite it being illegal to make hiring decisions on this basis. In addition, the report found that over a quarter of organisations would take account of whether a woman is pregnant or has young children during decisions about career progression or promotion, which is also in breach of the law.
Lyndsey commented, ‘This is both outdated and illegal and with the legislation that changed a couple of years ago in favour of shared parental leave it is also irrational. Although this (parental leave) may be challenging for small businesses, the benefit you get back of a loyal and committed employee returning back to your business means that it actually becomes an irrelevant factor to these businesses’.
